FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York Press Office: (212) 346-5500; media@iii.org
NEW YORK, April 20, 2017—Swiss Re will host a webinar on Thursday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to Noon EST, to discuss 2016’s global natural catastrophes, man-made disaster losses, and the economic effects of those events on the insurance industry.
Natural Catastrophes: Tornados, Earthquakes, Wildfires, And Floods – The Story Of 2016 will feature Swiss Re’s U.S. Chief Economist Dr. Thomas Hoizheu; the Insurance Information Institute’s Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Dr. Steven N. Weisbart, CLU; and flood specialist Dr. Joshua Woodbury.
The webinar will focus on last year's multi-billion-dollar flood events in Mississippi and Louisiana and the National Flood Insurance Program’s reauthorization, which is set to expire in September 2017. The webinar will also include a discussion about the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Canada, which is considered the largest insured loss event in the country.
Economic losses from natural catastrophes nearly doubled from 2015 to 2016 to an astounding $175 billion, while insured losses increased from $38 billion to $54 billion – the highest number for these disasters since 2012. This increase marks the first reversal from recent below-average years.
