This PowerPoint report, presented by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, at the Florida Insurance Market Summit, focuses on the problem of no-fault auto insurance fraud in the state. The presentation reports that no-fault fraud has reached crisis proportions in Florida, with the cost to insurers to cover the fraud rising by 70 percent per year. These costs will eventually be passed along to Florida drivers, and constitute a “fraud tax” that is lining the pockets of certain unscrupulous medical providers and their attorneys. The presentation describes Florida’s antifraud statute and provides the definition of a questionable claim. The report concludes that no-fault fraud has already cost Florida vehicle owners and their insurers an estimated $853 million since 2008 and this total could rise to $1.5 billion if the problem is left unchecked.
